I will miss the wonderful people I have met and the cool places I have visited on this trip.

From going to cafes for late night argila, to walking through the souks, to traveling around the region, Jordan has been full of fun and learning. It has been so wonderful to spend time with my cousin and I am forever grateful for her letting me crash on her couch for the past 2 weeks. :) Also I want to say a huge thank you to my host family who welcomed me into their home as a member of the family. I will miss hanging out at the house, cooking with Rose, talking with Faten watching the news with Waseem, and playing with lulu and tutu :) If you guys ever come to Amreeka please know you are welcome to stay with me.

Tomorrow I will be heading back to the states!! Cant wait to see my family :)

As for tonight we are planning to go to a Lebanese place for one last dinner all together.

Ma'selema and shookran (thanks) for reading!

The border crossing was quite an experience we took a taxi then a bus then stood in 3 diferent lines only to repeat the process on the other side. Meanwhile we were asked to show our passports, walk through metal detectors, and answer questions as tothe nature of our visit.

But once all that was over we were able to really enjoy Jerusalem. We spent our first night in the old city in a quaint little hostel off Mark's St. we walked through the Muslim quarter and the Armenian Quarter exploring the souks and restaurants. Later in the evening we went to Ben Yahuda St. to check out the nightlife. We found a cool outdoor cafe where we people watched and sang to some american music :)

The next day we visited a conservative Jewish neighborhood and also took a tour of the old city. One of the coolest things we did while in Jerusalem was to visit the Wailing Wall on Friday evening (Sabbath). People were dancing, singing and of course praying at the wall. Families brought their children and it was cool to see such a vibrant community come together to worship.

We also took a tour of the Mount of Olives which included the garden of Gethsemene. the olive trees int he garden are over a thousand years old and the church next to the garden (The Church of All Nations) is built to emulate the story of Jesus in the Garden. Inside it is dark with small windows in the ceiling to look like stars, the columns are tree like and there is a beautiful mosaic depicting Jesus in prayer in the garden on the night before he died.

More to come...

It was so fun to be there with my cousin and for us to connect with our heritage in the "Waton" (Homeland). We met up with some guys from my program who were in Beirut for the weekend and we had fun touring the city and seeing the sites with them.

Here are some of the highlights:

Jeita: These grottos are thousands of years old and are located on the outskirts of Beirut. It is quite a treck to go see them but even the drive was interesting because we got to see more of the lush green forests and mountain terrain of Lebanon. The caves are giant and are filled with impressive stalagmites and stalagtites. The upper grotto was over 50 feet tall and was miles deep. The formations of rocks inside the grotto were so intricate and beautiful. The grotto has been forming since the end of the last ice age!!!! there was a cross section of a stalagmite to show the aging/formation process and only the newest inch and a half has been formed in since the birth of christ. Time passes so differently in the natural world. We were not able to take pictures inside but I did purchase some postcards :)

The lower grotto was an underground lake!! We took a boat ride through the grotto which was so fun!

Corniche: Beautiful walkway right along the Mediterranean Sea. It was so nice to see families and groups of friends walking along as well as people excersizing, fishing and selling souveniers. Beirut has such a different feel than Amman. The beautiful ocean, unique architecture, and green trees everywhere definitely got me feeling inspired!

These are some pictures from the King Houssein Mosque in Amman. It is a giant mosque built to hole up to 5,000 people. It can be seen from most of the city and has become a major landmark. It is surrounded by a garden free to the public which includes soccer fields, tennis courts and walking paths. Many families come out after the sun goes down to have some hookah, go for a walk or just simply to enjoy the nice weather.

Durring the hot summer months the city hosts a festival called Amman Summer. Last night Reem took Kate and I to the festival and we had a great time looking through the bazzars and watching the performances.

Reem works for a microfinance organizations that helps women in Jordan start their own small businesses. The women had booths last night and were selling jewelry, soap, food and all kinds of handmade things. It was really great to see how their businesses were growing and hearing about how their small businesses were employing other people in the community as well. :)

More later...
Lol it started out at 5:30 am when we arrived at the bus station.

Around 11 we arrived at our first stop, Petra. The landscape was pretty stark but the giant rocks and the unobstructed views were amazing. We walked for about 30 minutes until we reached the famous treasury. The way was lined with smooth walls tht hid the treasury until the last second.

After climbing and exploring some more we headed back to the bus tired and reaaalllly thirsty.

We bought some food and water on the way and then watched out the window as we left civilization farther and farther behind. After several hours we reached what looked like a campsite far in the distance. The bus stopped and we all got out literally in the middle of the desert. We had arrived at Wadi Rum.

A little pickup truck pulled up and we all hopped in the back. The guy florred it and we all screamed and laughed as we flew accross the desert to our camp site. Then we unloaded our stuff and settled into our tents. After that we got back in the truck and went for an even crazier ride. I lost my sunglasses during this excursion lol but it was well worth it. Later we climbed some rocks and this hill of sand that took some serious effort to run up-haha it was much more fun running down. :)

After a long day we headed to a hugh plateau to watch the sunset. It was absolutely beautiful!!

Then we all headed back to the campsite for dinner and.... a HAFLA!! (party)
It is a normal workday for most Jordanians so mass is in the evening. After class, we decided to grab a cab and head to an area of Amman called Weibdeh to a "kaneesa latina"(catholic church).

The service was in Arabic and it was fun to follow along with the hymns and prayers. lol it was a challenge to keep up at times but overall the experience was a good one. The congregaton was really welcoming and at the end of the mass the priest actually invited all the "Amrekeyoon" ie the five of us, to come up to the front of the church so he could introduce us to the church community.

We were then invited to have coffee after mass and several people came up to us to personally welcome us and to talk about the United States (some of them had family there or had been there to study).
Nebo, the baptism site of Jesus and the dead sea

It was a full day but we were all grateful for a trip out of the city. It was really hot!! I think I drank like 3 liters of water "Ma'ii" in Arabic.

Our first stop was Madaba. It is a town about 45 minutes outside of Amman with a long history. We spent some time walking around and also watching some of the local artisans working on the town's specialty: "mo-sa-ic"- the artists in the shop were arranging a large peacock design when we visited and I was amazed at the meticulous process of creating the mosaic because each tiny piece of tile was added by hand!!!

Later we visited a church called St. George's where we saw the oldest known map of Mesopotamia. This huge map is actually a giant mosaic that covers most of the church floor and it documents settlements from the Sinai desert all the way to Madaba.

After a quick falafel and water break we hopped back in the bus and headed to Mt. Nebo. Supposedly this was the spot where Moses was burried. From the top of the mountain you can see Jerico and the Dead Sea. It is a pretty amazing because you could literally see for miles in all directions.

Then we headed to the site where John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan. It was pretty cool to think that Jesus actually walked where we were walking- I think the visit was meaningful for our whole group regardless of religion because it was like experiencing a piece of living history.

Our last stop for the day was the Dead Sea. After all that walking we were very happy to get to swin a little. We got covered in mud and had a blast floating in the sea.

This weekend we are going to Madaba, and Mt. Nebo with the program and then next weekend we are off to Petra and Wadi Rum. There are so many cool places to check out!!

On a side note: our host family has been teaching us how to haggle at the downtown souqs (markets) and I am happy to say that I bought a scarf today for half the original price lol the trick seems to be that you have to pretend you dont really "have" to buy it and you have to be willing to walk away (the seller will usually call after you or follow after you with a much more reasonable price).

We also went to a famous downtown restaurant for breakfast this morning. It is caled Hashems and is known throughout Jordan for having the best falafel in town. This humble little establishment is tucked in between two busy storefronts and has a small green sign. On Friday mornings the restaurant spills out into the alley and the street as well as the neighboring garage. Folding tables and chairs are everywhere and people form all over Jordan come to eat there with their families and friends. Even the King and Queen dropped by for a Friday breakfast with their family a few years ago (Their picture is proudly displayed in the wall along with other well known actors, politicians and ministry officials)

The pictures I uploaded prior to this post dipict the downtown markets and the front of Hashems restaurant as well as my roommate, host mom, host dad, and one of my host sisters.

Ok well we are off to explore some more!

Lol but meeting the family has been an entertaining affair and it has been fun being included in the family activities and outings. :) Some days we all pile into the car and go, usually it is to the supermarket, but of course we make a stop at Teta's (Grandma's) on the way- this tends to last several hours and then after finally making it to the store we come home, make dinner and sit around with the family talking and later watching the Arabic News.

Today was one of those days...we had a huge lunch because Subhi one of our program directors came over to eat with us. Our host family prepared a famous Palestinian dish called Ma'luba which is yellow rice, roasted chicken, onions and lebaneh. And when we walked in we found the whole family including the grandma and our host mom's sister. Needless to say it turned into a party. We all crowded around the table and passed around the salad, the leban and the Ma'lube. The food was so delicious and we all had fun laughing and talking about traveling, Jordanian life etc... After a while, tea was prepared as well as turkish coffee (kind of like Cuban cafe) and we sat and talked with Teta, Subhi and our host parents. The kids were running around and playing and we spent most of the afternoon like this.

Afterwards we went to visit a family friend and then later once we got back home worked on homework.

Whew a full day indeed!

Well that's all for today, but we are heading to Mt. Nebo and the Baptism site of Jesus this weekend so I hope to have many more stories to share!!

We had heard about a film festival coming to Amman, so on Thursday night we decided to check it out. We arrived a bit early so we could scope out some seats but ended up sitting on some cusions in the front next to a family who had packed a whole picnic dinner :) The show was outdoors and we had a wonderful view of the city at night.

The director was there and it was so interesting to hear him speak about his creative process and how important film making was to him. The film was called MICROPHONE and it was about the underground music scene in Alexandria, Egypt. We all want to find the movie soundtrack somewhere becuse it included Arabic rap, hiphop and even bluegrass! :)

On Friday I met up with my cousin Marlene and she came over to have lunch with me and my host family. It was so great to see her lol especially on the other side of the world. We ate rooz ma jadara (rice with lentils) and it was yummy!! Then we headed to Mecca Mall and later on we went to the famous Souq Jara (Friday Market).

The Souq has everything from jewelry, to handmade rugs to fresh falafel and fruit juice. Marlene and I tried a Watermelon smoothie wich essentially was crushed fresh watermelon and ice- really refreshing and tasty!!

Then we headed to AMIGOS a local hangout near the Souq. We met up with some other kids form our program and we watched Star Academy- A Lebanese version of American Idol with contestants from all over the Arab world.

It has been a fun weekend so far!
